How a Cat Water Fountain Works

The exact details of how a cat water fountain works are quite simple.

Water fountains have been around for thousands of years, built typically for the pride and prestige of a city or home. While earlier models relied more on a natural water flow, modern fountains use electricity and tubing. Water from a reservoir is pumped through a tube to the top of the fountain where it elegantly rushes out over the display for all to see and enjoy before returning to perform the cycle once more.

For cat drinking fountains, this water is filtered and cleaned during its rush-in, rush-out lifespan. A cat water fountain is no different. Usually made of plastic, a cat water fountain is amongst the smallest electrical fountains in use, providing purified clean water to our lovable feline pets.

All the most popular brands of cat water fountains (Dinkwell, CatIt, Petco, etc.) all work in a similar fashion. The water is stored in the fountain itself, with the larger fountains having an extra storage container attached for added water capacity. Right away, the first benefit of a cat water fountain over a water bowl is shown – more water. Since more water can be stored at a time without it stagnating, we don’t need to fill it up nearly as often as a bowl.

This water is then run through a filter to purify the water. This purification process removes all the harmful particles and flavours in the water, providing our cats with water much, much healthier than from the tap or sink. A normal cat water fountain uses a charcoal filter for this process, known for its strong filtering attributes and cleanliness.

Once through the filter, the water is pumped through the fountain and run over or through the fountain mechanism. All fountains are different in their delivery, but they all aerate the water. Water aeration is the reason cats enjoy fountains so much more than bland bowls. Nothing entices a kitty to grab a drink than moving water. Whether its water from the fish tank or the sink, moving water with fresh oxygen is healthier and more entertaining and fun for cats.

The water is recycled over and over again, constantly being filtered, constantly moving providing fresh air bubbles. It is easy to tell when the water level is low, as the motor gets slightly louder. Simply taking a cup of water and pouring it into the fountain adds more liquid for the fountain to continue its cycles.

Both for their health and happiness, a cat water fountain should be seriously considered by every loving and caring kitty owner.
